1953 R Type Bentley

After World War II, Rolls-Royce resumed automotible production with coach-built Silver Wraiths and the Bentley MkVI which was the first model built entirely by Rolls-Royce (both chassis and coach work) and was known as the “silent sports car.”

The R Type Bentley was introduced in 1952 as a refinement of the Mk VI and was also offered as the Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn. The “R Type” was known as the big bore and big boot model. Matched with its 4.5 litre engine was a sliky smooth floor mounted four speed transmission. It was the epitome of elegance, style and performance. The other R-Type was the Bentley Continental which became the pinical of Bentley motoring of it’s era.

This Bentley ( B157-TO ) was built in 1953 as the show room car for London Rolls-Royce dealer Charles Follett. The initial English owner was a R.D. Blackwell of Eaton Square and the car was subsequently owned in 1961 by John Hall O.B.E. who was Member of the House of Commons. The car was imported to American and during the sixties and was owned and driven by Broadway actor Patrick O’Neil. The car was initially restored by Dick Harvey at the restoration facilites of John McComb and Butch Murphy in Columbus, Ohio and upon completion won its class at the RROC National meet in 1981.

The car was given a cosmetic restoration to both its mechanical systems and coachwork in recent years after returning from a Grand Tour of Europe with the Bentley’s Drivers Club by it’s present owner.
